Herbert M Boynton

September 2, 1930 ~ June 27, 2016 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Herbert M. Boynton of Whitefield, NH passed away June 27 surrounded by his loving family. Herb was born September 2, 1930 to Ruth (Peabody) and Wellington Boynton of Easton, MA. Herb graduated from Twin Mountain High School with the class of 1949 and enlisted in the United States Air Force the same year. He served during the Korean War until 1952. He married his high school sweetheart, Pauline McGee, on February 23, 1952. They raised their family in Whitefield and were happily married for 64 years.

After serving his country, Herb worked for Public Service as a lineman and then went on to work as an electrician on projects in Messina, New York and New Milford, Connecticut. In 1959, Herb founded Boynton Electric, Inc. and ran it successfully in Whitefield for many years until merging with Fitzmorris Company. Fitzmorris became one of the largest electrical, mechanical and plumbing companies in New England specializing in large commercial projects. Herb later founded Crossroads Sports in Twin Mountain and operated it for several years before selling. The store is still in operation today. While running the store, he reopened Boynton Electric, Inc. providing electrical construction and motor control technology for many water and sewage treatment plants throughout New England. In the 1980’s, Herb became Mountain Manager of the Bretton Woods Ski area and Vice President for the Mt. Washington Hotel. After managing Bretton Woods for several years, he purchased the ski area and became general partner until his retirement in 1997. While owner, he worked with his team to fulfill his vision to improve snowmaking, installed one of the first detachable quad ski lifts in New England, developed many new trails and built a mid-mountain lodge. During his years at Bretton Woods, the ski area hosted the athletes for the Special Olympics Winter Games. This event brought tremendous joy to him and his staff. He also served on the St. Matthew’s Parish Council and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion.

Herb enjoyed skiing, boating, golf, family gatherings, travel and was an avid New England sports fan. He had many wonderful years at the cottage he and Pauline built on Leavitt Bay in Ossipee, NH. After retiring, Herb and Pauline enjoyed spending winters in Florida. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attended most of their activities and events.

Herb is survived by his wife Pauline, his children Daniel Boynton and wife Marilyn of Lakewood Ranch, FL, Jean Brigham of Shirley, MA, Pamela McKinley of Worcester, MA, Herb Boynton of Freedom, NH and Rick Boynton and his spouse Criss of Chicago, IL. He is survived by his sister, Sara Zaffrann of Shrewsbury, MA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Frank, sisters Ruth, Grace and Gladys and son-in-law Michael Brigham.
