Richard J. (“Dick”) Mallion, 83, of Whitefield, NH, passed away at home on February 23, 2023. He was born in Boston, MA in 1940 to William J. and Helen G. (Walkling) Mallion. He grew up in Medford, MA. He was an accomplished musician. He attended Northeastern University (ROTC), where he met his college sweetheart, Dorothea, in the marching band. After graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry, he served in the Army in Viet Nam. He married Dorothea on his return home. During the course of his military career, they traveled around the United States and to South Korea. He received a M.S. in Operations Research from Georgia Tech and attended the U.S. Army War College. He retired as a Brigadier General. After retiring from the Army, he turned his energies to conservation. He worked with several organizations to protect and preserve nature and received an EPA Lifetime Achievement Award. He took part in bird counts for the Audubon Society, local politics, and supported ROTC at Northeastern and JROTC in upstate New Hampshire. He loved watching sports (all of them), music, reading, catch & release fly fishing, fly tying, hiking, and watching the critters and birds that wandered by his windows. Thank you to all his friends, especially the Tractor Patrol. Dick loved Whitefield and everything. about the beautiful state of New Hampshire, especially the people, the birds, wildlife and, of course, the trees.
He is survived by the love of his life, Dorothea; his daughter Cynthia; and his brother Robert.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 6, at the Ross Funeral Home from 11-12 PM, with a service at 12 PM with Reverend Lyn Winter officiating.
