Michael Toner Obituary

Michael Hugh Toner, 91 years young, formerly of Pawtucket, RI, and recently relocated to Littleton, NH to be with family and offer his unsolicited opinions full-time, yet passed away at home on March 31st at about 8:30 p.m. He spent his final moments where he wanted to be while he went out with quiet dignity, a bit of sarcasm,—surrounded by friends and family who loved him, tolerated his jokes, and maybe even inherited his dry sense of humor.

Michael's story kicked off with an act of bold teenage optimism (or possibly just teenage stubbornness) when he enlisted in the Army at the age of 16 to serve in WWII from Nov 1949 to Jun 1952. Stationed in Germany as a gunner, he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal—though he'd probably say he was “just doing his job.”

In June 1953, he married the late Marie Anna Delia Girard, embarking on a decades-long partnership that included everlasting love, and through the good, bad, and indifferent.

Michael re-enlisted—this time with the USAF from Dec 1953 to 1957—because one branch of the military wasn’t enough. After his military chapters, he hit the road—earning a Chauffeur License in 1968 and driving long haul trucks for nearly 60 years. He also cooked on the side, as he loved food. His last job was truck driving for Major Electric in Pawtucket, RI.

Michael wasn’t just about work and service (though he did plenty of both). He was a proud member of Holy Family Parish in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where he perfected the art of sitting in “his spot” at Mass. A lifelong lover of wind and sky, he was also a member of the Windblown Friends Kite Club, Kites Over New England, and the American Kite Flyers Association—because nothing says freedom like sending a colorful piece of nylon soaring into the sky while offering unsolicited kite advice to strangers.

His generosity extended beyond his family and into the community. Michael donated time, money, and effort to countless causes, including the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen and Disabled American Veterans—though he was never one to brag about it (unless you asked, in which case, he had stories). The President’s Volunteer Service Award now bears his name, though he probably would’ve told you, “It’s just a piece of paper, but it’s nice they noticed.”

In addition to his late wife, Marie Anna Delia Girard—who no doubt greeted him with an eye-roll and a “what took you so long?”—Michael is survived by his two daughters: Janice L. Gallego of Littleton, NH, who is known as “you’re crazy like your father”—a title that’s either a heartfelt compliment or a gentle warning, depending on the day and the company. Michael wore that particular brand of “crazy” like a badge of honor, and Janice continues the tradition with pride (and more than a few memorable stories); and Suzanne R. Grimes of Cumberland, RI; as well as one son, David R. Toner of Woonsocket, RI—each of whom inherited at least one of his quirks, whether they admit it or not.

Michael was the son of the late Hugh Edward Toner, a strong-willed and stubborn Irishman (some would say delightfully so), and Ida Antoinette Figuerado, an organized, no-nonsense stay-at-home mom who kept the household running like a well-oiled machine—and made no secret of the fact that Michael was the apple of her eye.

He was the beloved little brother of Teresa C. Wilchester, who always looked out for him, offering both guidance and the occasional reality check—they were thick as thieves. His younger sister, Maureen Girard, although taken far too soon, was fiercely protected by her big brother, who made sure she felt safe and loved every step of the way.

Michael was also the proud father of the late Maria T. Toner, whom he now rejoins—with love, laughter, and probably a very long overdue conversation, with at least one of them rolling their eyes.

He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Michael Gallego, named after him, who was diagnosed with Autism, was a big inspiration to raise awareness with his passion for flying kites and teaching disabled kids to make and fly kites. Paulo DaRosa-Gallego, his self-proclaimed mini-me, received no shortage of life advice—whether asked for or not—which helped shape him into the confident, kind young man he is today. And Rose Toner, more of a daughter than a granddaughter, who accompanied him on all sorts of “slightly questionable” adventures, patiently taught him how to use modern technology and proudly held the title of #2 on his speed dial. Rounding out the crew are Dennis S., Danny R. Grimes, Damian, and Dillon Toner.

As if that weren’t enough legacy to manage, he also had eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews—all of whom now have stories to pass down that start with, “You know what Grandpa used to say…”

Michael's wit was dry enough to be legally considered a drought. He could drop a one-liner that would take you a second to process—but when it landed, it landed hard. He talked to anyone, anywhere, anytime—cashiers, neighbors, total strangers. He believed a good conversation could start anywhere, and he was usually right. Always neatly dressed, he had the kind of self-respect humor that never wavered.

If you feel moved to help, contributions toward Michael’s funeral expenses would be deeply appreciated. You may contact Rose Toner at (401) 871-0809, speak with her in person during the services, or mail a donation to:
