Mary Alice Ducharme Mayhew of Landaff, NH took her last breath and quietly passed in her sleep on Saturday evening, April 21, 2018 at the age of 97. She was born on June 4, 1920 in Westfield, VT to Mary Jane Sevigny and Nelson Clement Ducharme and attended a one-room schoolhouse until the 8th grade at which point she stayed home to help her mother.
Mary Alice married her husband, William Leo Mayhew of 52 years on November 4, 1939. Although she had no siblings, her parents took in a child, Edwin Norway, and raised him as their own. Mary Alice was a beloved member of the community and was a very active and devout member of her church, St. Catherine of Sienna in Lisbon, NH. She thoroughly enjoyed spending hours in her gardens and working in her yard and was often found there when not in the house preparing large meals for her family. She loved to travel as often as she could and had an appreciation for the finer things in life. She was very proud of her noble French heritage being the ninth great-granddaughter of the Marquise Marie Chantal Rabutin de Sévigné, unofficial council to King Louis XIV at the Palace of Versailles in the late 1600s and visited France twice to visit the family residences (now museums).
Of all her interests, nothing was more important to her than her family and she would do anything in her means to support, care and defend. Mary Alice would sacrifice her own needs for those of her family and close friends. She is predeceased by her late husband William Leo in 1991 and a son Elmer Joseph, born 11/2/56 and died 11/4/56. She is survived by her three children, Rochelle Villeneuve of Landaff, NH, Jane Scovill (and husband Clifford) of East Hampton, CT and Francis Mayhew (and wife Doreen) of Middletown, CT; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grand children and 7 great-great grandchildren.
An evening viewing will take place on Tuesday evening, May 1st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Ross Funeral Home at 282 West Main Street in Littleton, NH. A Roman Catholic memorial mass will take place on Wednesday, May 2nd at 10:00am at St. Catherine of Sienna in Lisbon, NH and burial at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell, VT at 1:00pm.
