James D. Platt (88) of Whitefield, NH died at home on January 31, 2025 in the loving care of his beloved wife, Priscilla. He was born to James Edward and Leona Platt at the home of his grandparents in N. Stratford, NH. He was the eldest son and had three siblings, Wanda, Clyde and Judy. They were raised “on the hill” in Groveton, NH. James served as an altar boy at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. At 17 years of age, he enlisted in the Army National Guard Reserves. He was proud to serve his country and took the appointment seriously from first to
last. He did continuing training over the years, became a rifle marksman, served as Sergeant of Arms, volunteered with the Color Guard and presented in many parades and funerals. After 33 years, James retired from the Army National Guard with the ranking of Staff Sergeant E6. James worked several jobs from driving a truck for the state, like his father, to selling insurance which required he travel to NY City. Most of his working life was spent at the Groveton Paper Mill from which he retired after 34 years. Being around James was comfortable. Simple and refreshing. Everyone liked him. He delighted in making people laugh and he laughed a lot too. He liked all classic cars but was partial to his gold Chevy. He enjoyed scratch tickets, peanut butter,
chocolate and more chocolate. In retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, learned how to use a computer and worked part time at Santa’s Village in the blacksmith shop. He loved driving “up town” for a paper and to chat with locals. He enjoyed country music, watching movies, collecting coins, reading his military books as well as photography and taking car rides “around the mountains” which he called God’s country. He gave to every cause possible, especially the military. James was an easy man to love and was well loved in return.
He is survived by his wife Priscilla, of 33 years, daughters Michelle, Melinda and Maureen, stepdaughter Sherry, stepson Jody, son in law Eric, grandchildren Alexander, Kassandra and Dahlia and several great grandchildren. He will be truly and deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 11:00 am at Ross Funeral Home, 282 West Main St, Littleton, NH 03561. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Legion, Groveton Post 17, 206 State Street, Groveton, NH 03582.
