Obituary

Florence Amanda Houghton past peacefully while enjoying her favorite view of the White Mountains on January 27, 2021, while at her home in Bethlehem, NH.  Florence and her husband Carol Houghton retired to their home in Bethlehem, NH about 26 years ago.  They enjoyed a loving and happy life.  Carol Houghton passed away in January 2000.  Florence enjoyed a remarkable life and achieved several notable milestones.  She graduated from East Providence High School in 1951, in East Providence, RI.  After graduation she went to work as a weaver manufacturing webbing belts for use in the U.S. military.  In 1969 she suffered a serious industrial accident.  After a year of rehabilitation, she entered college at J & W College in Providence, RI.  There she earned her Associate of Science degree in accounting and graduated with honors in 1972.  She continued her education at Johnson & Wales College in Providence, RI and earned her Bachelor of Science, cum laude, degree in 1973.  While in college, Florence was a leading voice and advocate for the advancement of woman in business.  Her stewardship in promoting the advancement of woman in business was recognized with the awarding of special distinctions and honors by Johnson & Wales College’s trustees at her graduation ceremony.  Following her graduation, Florence joined the Internal Revenue Service as an IRS agent in Springfield, MA in 1973.  Her career with the IRS included the recognition of many awards and her promotions within management.  At the time of her retirement in 1994, she held the management position of Examination Division Branch Chief in the Hartford District in Connecticut.  After retirement from the IRS, Florence and Carol retired to Bethlehem, NH.  One of her more enjoyable pastimes was crocheting.  Throughout her life she continued to advocate for the better welfare and advancement of woman.  In her later years, she combined her passion for crocheting and woman’s advocacy by crocheting blankets and regularly donating them to the batter woman’s shelter in Bethlehem.  This passion continued up to her last day where she continued crocheting a blanket for those in need while enjoying her favorite view of the White Mountains.  Florence is survived by her son Robert, an attorney; Lillian, a college professor; and Jennifer, a computer systems manager along with three grandchildren, Ashley, Kimberly, and Laura.  She will be buried at the family grave site at the Rehoboth Cemetery, in Rehoboth, MA in the early spring.
