Welcome to the memorial page for

Barbara "Bobbie" D Barrand

October 17, 1924 ~ June 15, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Barbara D. “Bobbie” Barrand of Franconia, NH, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2016, at the Lafayette Center; she was 91 years old. The daughter of Harry Barrand and Helen Drayton Barrand, Bobbie was born October 17, 1924, in South Orange, NJ, and grew up in Stamford, CT. After graduating from Ogontz School and Ogontz Junior College, she attended St. Lawrence University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She enjoyed a long and gratifying career as a first-grade teacher, primarily in Rockland County, NY.  While attending Ogontz School, Bobbie first experienced Ogontz White Mountain Camp in Lyman, NH. Her association with the camp began when she was a camper; she later became a counselor, then Log Hall Hostess, and finally the camp’s director.  During the years she spent at her beloved Ogontz Camp, Bobbie also developed a deep love of New Hampshire.

Throughout the four middle decades of her life, Bobbie’s love of travel took her to many exciting destinations. Accompanied by all their dogs, she and her sister, Donnie—who was also her best friend—crisscrossed the USA numerous times in their RV, visiting friends along the way and taking hundreds of photographs to record their adventures. After retiring as a teacher in the 1980s, Bobbie moved to Franconia, fulfilling a decades-long dream. She loved sharing her home there, frequently hosting friends and family. Always a lover of animals, especially poodles, Bobbie viewed the wildlife that frequented her yard as her guests, reveling in the presence of bears, foxes, moose, and the beautiful songbirds that graced her many feeders. A gifted athlete, Bobbie loved skiing; she also enjoyed playing golf, primarily at the Profile Club, where she was a longtime member.  Bobbie’s love of children was reflected not only in her teaching career, but also in her association with Copper Cannon Camp, a nonprofit organization that provides a free traditional camp experience for children from all over New Hampshire. For many years she served as a member of Copper Cannon’s board, her tenure including a stint as board chair. To recognize her many years of service, the camp named its Campfire Circle in her honor 15 years ago.

Predeceased by her brother, Harry Barrand, and her sister, Donna Barrand, Bobbie is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Barrand; her niece, Katherine Barrand; three nephews, Keith, Stephen, and David Barrand; as well as several great-nephews, great-nieces, and cousins. A memorial service for Bobbie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at The Church of the Epiphany in Lisbon, NH, followed by a reception at The Profile Club in Franconia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts in Bobbie’s name be sent to Copper Cannon Camp, P.O. Box 124, Franconia, NH 03580.
